Three gold drugs remain in active clinical use for this purpose in the United States : auranofin, sodium aurothiomalate ( gold sodium thiomalate ) and aurothioglucose.
Some gold salts do have anti-inflammatory properties and at present two are still used as pharmaceuticals in the treatment of arthritis and other similar conditions in the US ( sodium aurothiomalate and auranofin ).
FDA modified its labeling on February, 2009 to include a precaution of drug interaction with gold . " Nitritoid reactions ( symptoms include facial flushing, nausea, vomiting and hypotension ) have been reported rarely in patients on therapy with injectable gold ( sodium aurothiomalate ) and concomitant ACE inhibitor therapy including Monopril / Monopril HCT ."
